[IPv6] How to set up IPv6 in ASUS router?

What is IPv6?

IPv6 is the next-generation Internet protocol that supports a massive number of networked devices, improves network performance and security.

  • IP Address : When you enter a website address in your browser, it is converted into a set of numbers called an IP address, which is used to identify devices on a network.
  • IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4) : Currently the most widely used IP address system on the Internet. It uses 32-bit encoding and can provide about 4.2 billion IP addresses.
  • IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) : A new protocol developed to address the shortage of IPv4 addresses. It uses 128-bit encoding, allowing for approximately 340 trillion IP addresses.

Note: Please refer to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to get more information about IPv6. (connection type, IPv6 IP setting and DNS etc.)

Please refer to the following steps to set up IPv6 on your router

Step 1. Connect your computer to the router via wired or WiFi connection and enter your router's LAN IP or router URL http://www.asusrouter.com to the WEB GUI.

Please refer to How to enter the router setting page to learn more.

Step 2. Enter your login username and password on the login page and then click [Sign In].

Note: If you forgot the username and/or password, please restore the router to the factory default status.

Please refer to How to reset the router to factory default setting to learn more.

Step 3. The steps of setting IPv6 are as follows: (Please first confirm your internet connection type with your Internet Service Provider (ISP))

Note:  WAN > Internet connection > WAN connection type must be set first. Please refer to [Wireless Router] How to set up an Internet Connection?(WAN connection types) to learn more.

(1) Click [IPv6] in [Advanced Settings].

(2) Choose the IPv6 [Connection Type] based on the [WAN Connection Type] you set in [WAN].

The following IPv6 types, please ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for setup information.

FLET's IPv6 service is an IPv6 service for specific ISPs in Japan. Please refer to FLET'S HIKARI Official Website (flets.com), ASUS FAQ [Wireless Router] How to setup IPv6 - FLET’S IPv6 service?

Tunnel 6to4 is an Internet transition mechanism for migrating from IPv4 to IPv6, a system that allows IPv6 packets to be transmitted over an IPv4 network (generally the IPv4 Internet) without the need to configure explicit tunnels.

Tunnel 6in4 is an Internet transition mechanism for migrating from Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) to IPv6.

Tunnel 6rd (Rapid Deployment) is an IPv6 tunneling technique, similar to 6to4 tunneling. It is stateless and encapsulates IPv6 packets into IPv4 packets.

(3) Below are descriptions of three commonly used IPv6 connection types.

Choose your I Pv6 connection type based on the IPv4 WAN connection type you have leased from your Internet Service Provider (ISP):

IPv4 Connection Type

IPv6 Connection Type

PPPoE

Native

Static IP

Static IP

Automatic IP

Passthrough

Other

Please check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP)

Native

When your WAN > Internet Connection > WAN Connection Type is set to [PPPoE], please select [Native] for the IPv6 Connection Type.

(1) Select the IPv6 connection type as [Native].

(2) Click [Apply] to save.

Step 4. To check the connection, access IPv6 service website as below:

Enter the IPv6 TEST website, and after some testing, you can see on the page whether your browser and the network service you are using can support the IPv6 protocol.

FAQ

1. Is it possible to set up a PPPoE connection on the IPv6 settings page?

Currently, manually adjusting PPPoE connection on the IPv6 settings page is not supported.

You only need to set the WAN connection type to [PPPoE], then go to the IPv6 settings page and select the IPv6 connection type [Native], and the router will automatically populate the relevant IPv6 information.

[Wireless Router] How to set up an Internet Connection?(WAN connection types)

2. If I set the router to Access Point mode, will it support IPv6?

Not supported, because when the ASUS wireless router is set to Access Point mode, the IP address is assigned through the upstream modem/router, so IPv6 is not supported.

For more information about router operating modes, please refer to:[Wireless Router] Introduction of Operation Mode

3. How can I check my WAN connection type on the router's setting page?

Go to the router settings page > [WAN] > [Internet Connection] > [WAN Connection Type] to check

4. Failed IPv6 Internet access through router

    a. Please check if the IPv4 and IPv6 connection types are set correctly, and you can ask your internet service provider (ISP) if the relevant information is correct.

    b. Use the cable provided by your Internet Service Provider(ISP) connect to your computer directly, check if the computer could connect to IPv6 Internet.

    c. Please make sure your router is upgraded to the latest firmware. You can refer to this FAQ for more details. [Wireless Router] How to update the firmware of your router to the latest version

    d. Please reset your router to factory default status. You can refer to this FAQ for router reset. [Wireless Router] How to reset the router to factory default setting?
